EV FAQs

Chevy EV on Highway

Just take a look at the roads in the and area, and you’ll likely see many more electric vehicles than you did even just a few years ago. Advances in EV technology have given us vehicles that are better for the environment and, without the need for gas, easier on the wallet. But given that EVs are still relatively new compared to vehicles with standard internal combustion engines, many people have questions about them. How long does it take to charge an electric vehicle? Are they really better for the environment? Below, our team at Sam Leman Automotive Group answers these and other common questions we receive. If your question isn’t covered here, feel free to contact us! We’re happy to help.

How Long Does it Take to Charge an Electric Vehicle?

There is no one-size-fits-all easy answer to, “How long does it take to charge an electric vehicle?” It depends. This is because you have three charging options with EVs, and each comes with a different charging time:

  1. Level 1: The most accessible type of charging, Level 1 allows you to charge your EV with a standard 120-volt wall outlet. While convenient, Level 1 charging takes the longest, requiring a full day or more to fully charge a depleted battery.
  2. Level 2: You can find Level 2 charging stations in public or have one professionally installed in your home. Level 2 is approximately twice as fast as Level 1, and you can typically charge a depleted battery in several hours or overnight.
  3. Level 3 / DC Fast Charging: Level 3 or DC Fast Charging is only available at certain public charging stations, but it is your fastest option. You can fully charge a depleted battery in about an hour.

Are Electric Vehicles Better for the Environment?

Yes! EVs produce fewer emissions than traditional vehicles, so they don’t release as many damaging pollutants into the local environment. Also, you may be able to use renewable energy sources, like solar or wind, to generate electricity to charge your EV, further enhancing the environmental benefits. Don’t forget that EVs run much quieter than traditional vehicles, so noise pollution is kept to a minimum, too.

How Much Does it Cost to Charge an Electric Vehicle?

Again, the answer depends. You first have to consider the cost of electricity. However, on average, it costs an average of $56 to charge an EV for one month and $674 to charge an EV for a year, if you’re charging at home. At public stations, you are typically charged per kWh used.
